NCI Director Dr. W. Kimryn Rathmell

Kimryn Rathmell is an American physician-scientist and nephrologist known for her research in the field of kidney cancer. She is currently the Chair of the Department of Medicine at Vanderbilt University Medical Center.

Early Life and Education[edit | edit source]

Kimryn Rathmell was born in United States. She completed her undergraduate studies at Stanford University, where she earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Biochemistry. She then pursued her medical degree (MD) and a PhD in Biophysics at Stanford University School of Medicine.

Career[edit | edit source]

After completing her medical and doctoral training, Rathmell undertook a residency in Internal Medicine at the University of Chicago. She then completed a fellowship in Medical Oncology at the University of Pennsylvania.

Rathmell joined the faculty at Vanderbilt University Medical Center where she has held various positions, including Director of the Division of Hematology and Oncology. In 2020, she was appointed Chair of the Department of Medicine at Vanderbilt.

Research[edit | edit source]

Rathmell's research focuses on the molecular biology of renal cell carcinoma, a type of kidney cancer. Her work has contributed to understanding the genetic and metabolic pathways involved in the development and progression of this disease. She has published numerous articles in peer-reviewed journals and has been recognized for her contributions to the field of oncology.
