Linda Fried

Linda P. Fried is an American geriatrician and epidemiologist known for her research in the fields of aging, frailty, and public health. She is the Dean of the Columbia University Mailman School of Public Health and a Senior Vice President at Columbia University.

Early Life and Education[edit | edit source]

Linda P. Fried was born in New York City. She earned her B.A. from the University of Chicago, her M.D. from Rush Medical College, and her M.P.H. from the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health.

Career[edit | edit source]

Fried began her career as a faculty member at the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine and the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health. She later became the founding director of the Center on Aging and Health at Johns Hopkins. In 2008, she was appointed Dean of the Columbia University Mailman School of Public Health.

Research[edit | edit source]

Fried's research has significantly contributed to the understanding of frailty in older adults. She developed the frailty phenotype, a clinical syndrome in which three or more of the following criteria are present: unintentional weight loss, self-reported exhaustion, weakness, slow walking speed, and low physical activity. Her work has helped to identify frailty as a distinct clinical syndrome and has influenced guidelines for the care of older adults.

Linda P. Fried has received numerous awards for her contributions to public health and geriatric medicine. She is an elected member of the National Academy of Medicine and has been recognized by the American Geriatrics Society and the Gerontological Society of America.

Personal Life[edit | edit source]

Fried is married and has two children. She continues to reside in New York City.
