Marathon County is a county located in the U.S. state of Wisconsin. As of the 2020 census, the population was 138,013. Its county seat is Wausau. The county was created in 1850 and organized in 1851.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 1,576 square miles (4,080 km²), of which 1,545 square miles (4,000 km²) is land and 31 square miles (80 km²) (2.0%) is water. It is the largest county in Wisconsin by land area and fourth-largest by total area.

As of the 2020 census, there were 138,013 people, 55,000 households, and 36,000 families residing in the county. The population density was 89 people per square mile (34/km²). The racial makeup of the county was 88.5% White, 1.5% Black or African American, 0.5% Native American, 6.0% Asian, 0.1% Pacific Islander, 1.5% from other races, and 2.0% from two or more races. 3.5% of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.

Marathon County has a diverse economy with significant contributions from manufacturing, agriculture, and healthcare. The county is known for its production of dairy products, ginseng, and paper products. The Wausau area is a regional hub for healthcare services, with several major hospitals and clinics.

The county is served by several school districts, including the Wausau School District, D.C. Everest School District, and Marathon City School District. Higher education institutions in the county include the University of Wisconsin–Stevens Point at Wausau and Northcentral Technical College.

Major highways in Marathon County include Interstate 39, U.S. Route 51, Wisconsin Highway 29, and Wisconsin Highway 52. The Central Wisconsin Airport provides commercial air service to the region.
