Mast cell tumor
Mast Cell Tumor
A Mast Cell Tumor (MCT) is a type of neoplasm found in mammals and is one of the most common skin cancers in dogs. It is named after the mast cell, a type of white blood cell that plays a key role in the immune system.
Overview[edit | edit source]
Mast cells are part of the mammalian immune system and are involved in inflammation and allergy responses. They contain granules rich in histamine and heparin, and their excessive proliferation can lead to the formation of a mast cell tumor.
Symptoms and Diagnosis[edit | edit source]
The symptoms of a mast cell tumor can vary greatly, but often include a lump or bump on the skin, redness, swelling, and ulceration. Diagnosis is typically made through a combination of physical examination, biopsy, and histopathology.
Treatment and Prognosis[edit | edit source]
Treatment options for mast cell tumors include surgery, radiation therapy, and chemotherapy. The prognosis depends on a variety of factors, including the grade of the tumor, the location of the tumor, and the overall health of the animal.
