Maura Lynch
Maura Lynch (10 September 1938 – 9 December 2017) was an Irish physician and Roman Catholic nun known for her work in Uganda and Angola. She was a member of the Medical Missionaries of Mary and made significant contributions to obstetrics and gynecology in these countries.
Early Life and Education[edit | edit source]
Maura Lynch was born in Youghal, County Cork, Ireland. She attended University College Dublin where she studied medicine. After completing her medical degree, she joined the Medical Missionaries of Mary in 1962.
Medical Career[edit | edit source]
Lynch was initially assigned to Nigeria, where she worked during the Nigerian Civil War. She later moved to Uganda and then to Angola, where she spent the majority of her career. In Angola, she was instrumental in establishing healthcare services in the region of Huambo.
Contributions to Healthcare[edit | edit source]
Lynch specialized in obstetrics and gynecology, focusing on the treatment of fistulas, a severe medical condition affecting women after childbirth. She was a pioneer in fistula surgery and trained many local doctors and nurses in this field. Her work significantly improved the quality of life for countless women in Angola and Uganda.
Awards and Recognition[edit | edit source]
In recognition of her contributions to healthcare, Maura Lynch received several awards, including the Presidential Distinguished Service Award for the Irish Abroad in 2014. She was also honored by the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland.
Death[edit | edit source]
Maura Lynch passed away on 9 December 2017 in Drogheda, County Louth, Ireland.
