Nancy Bonini
Nancy Bonini is an American neuroscientist and geneticist known for her pioneering work in the field of neurodegenerative diseases. She is a professor at the University of Pennsylvania and a member of the National Academy of Sciences.
Early Life and Education[edit | edit source]
Nancy Bonini received her undergraduate degree from Princeton University and her Ph.D. from the University of Wisconsin–Madison. Her doctoral research focused on the genetic mechanisms underlying Drosophila development.
Research and Career[edit | edit source]
Bonini's research primarily focuses on understanding the genetic and molecular mechanisms of neurodegenerative diseases using the model organism Drosophila melanogaster (fruit fly). Her work has significantly contributed to the understanding of diseases such as Alzheimer's disease, Parkinson's disease, and Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS).
Key Contributions[edit | edit source]
- **Discovery of Genetic Modifiers**: Bonini's lab identified several genetic modifiers that influence the progression of neurodegenerative diseases in Drosophila models.
- **Protein Aggregation Studies**: Her research has provided insights into the role of protein aggregation in neurodegenerative diseases.
- **Therapeutic Targets**: Bonini's work has led to the identification of potential therapeutic targets for treating neurodegenerative diseases.
Awards and Honors[edit | edit source]
Nancy Bonini has received numerous awards and honors for her contributions to neuroscience and genetics, including:
- Membership in the National Academy of Sciences
- The Ellison Medical Foundation Senior Scholar Award
- The Glenn Award for Research in Biological Mechanisms of Aging
Personal Life[edit | edit source]
Bonini is married to fellow scientist Robert Darnell, and they have two children. She is also an advocate for women in science and actively mentors young scientists.
