The Ndrangheta is a prominent Italian organized crime syndicate based in the region of Calabria, in southern Italy. It is considered one of the most powerful and dangerous criminal organizations in the world. The name "Ndrangheta" derives from the Greek word "andragathía," meaning "heroism" or "virtue."

History[edit | edit source]

The origins of the Ndrangheta can be traced back to the late 19th century. It emerged as a rural criminal organization involved in cattle rustling, kidnapping, and extortion. Over time, it expanded its activities to include drug trafficking, money laundering, and arms smuggling. The Ndrangheta's influence grew significantly in the latter half of the 20th century, particularly in the 1970s and 1980s, when it became heavily involved in the international cocaine trade.

Structure[edit | edit source]

The Ndrangheta is organized into small, family-based units known as "ndrine." Each ndrina operates independently but is connected to other ndrine through blood ties and alliances. The organization is hierarchical, with a clear chain of command. At the top is the "Capo Crimine" or "Capo dei Capi," who oversees the entire organization. Below the Capo Crimine are various regional leaders and local bosses.

Activities[edit | edit source]

The Ndrangheta is involved in a wide range of criminal activities, including:

  • Drug trafficking: The Ndrangheta is one of the world's leading importers and distributors of cocaine, primarily from South America.
  • Extortion: The organization extorts money from businesses and individuals through threats and violence.
  • Money laundering: The Ndrangheta launders money through legitimate businesses, including construction, real estate, and tourism.
  • Arms smuggling: The group is involved in the illegal trade of firearms and other weapons.
  • Kidnapping: Historically, the Ndrangheta engaged in high-profile kidnappings for ransom.

Global Reach[edit | edit source]

While the Ndrangheta's base of operations is in Calabria, its influence extends far beyond Italy. The organization has established a presence in several countries, including Canada, Australia, Germany, and the United States. It has formed alliances with other criminal organizations, such as the Sicilian Mafia, the Camorra, and the Sacra Corona Unita.

Law Enforcement Efforts[edit | edit source]

Italian and international law enforcement agencies have made significant efforts to combat the Ndrangheta. High-profile arrests, asset seizures, and undercover operations have disrupted some of the organization's activities. However, the Ndrangheta's secretive nature and deep-rooted connections make it a challenging target for law enforcement.
