Northumberland County, Pennsylvania
Northumberland County, Pennsylvania is a county located in the U.S. state of Pennsylvania. As of the 2020 census, the population was 91,647. The county seat is Sunbury. The county was created on March 21, 1772, from parts of Lancaster, Berks, Bedford, Cumberland, and Northampton counties and named for the English county of Northumberland.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 478 square miles (1,240 km²), of which 458 square miles (1,190 km²) is land and 19 square miles (49 km²) (4.0%) is water.

Demographics[edit | edit source]
As of the census of 2000, there were 94,556 people, 38,835 households, and 25,592 families residing in the county. The population density was 206 people per square mile (80/km²). There were 43,164 housing units at an average density of 94 per square mile (36/km²).
Government and politics[edit | edit source]
Northumberland County is governed by a board of three county commissioners. The county is part of Pennsylvania's 12th congressional district.

The county is served by several public school districts, including Shikellamy School District, Line Mountain School District, and Mount Carmel Area School District. Higher education institutions in the county include Susquehanna University and Bucknell University.
