Oligozoospermia
Oligozoospermia is a medical condition characterized by a low sperm count in men. It is one of the significant causes of male infertility.
Definition[edit | edit source]
Oligozoospermia is defined as having fewer than 15 million sperm per milliliter of semen. It is a common finding in male infertility. Often semen with a decreased sperm concentration may also show significant abnormalities in sperm morphology and motility (technically "oligoasthenoteratozoospermia").
Causes[edit | edit source]
There are many causes for oligozoospermia including:
- Pre-testicular causes
- Testicular causes
- Post-testicular causes
Diagnosis[edit | edit source]
The diagnosis of oligozoospermia is based on one low count in a semen analysis performed on two occasions. For many men with oligozoospermia, the cause of their condition is unknown (idiopathic).
Treatment[edit | edit source]
The treatment for oligozoospermia depends on the cause of the condition. It may include surgical correction of an underlying problem, medication, or assisted reproductive technology such as intrauterine insemination (IUI) or in vitro fertilization (IVF).
