Osilodrostat phosphate
Osilodrostat phosphate is a pharmaceutical drug used in the treatment of Cushing's syndrome, a rare disorder that affects the body's cortisol levels. It is marketed under the brand name Isturisa by Novartis, a multinational pharmaceutical company.
Mechanism of Action[edit | edit source]
Osilodrostat phosphate works by inhibiting the enzyme 11β-hydroxylase, which is involved in the final step of cortisol synthesis in the adrenal gland. By blocking this enzyme, osilodrostat phosphate reduces the overproduction of cortisol, thereby alleviating the symptoms of Cushing's syndrome.
Clinical Use[edit | edit source]
Osilodrostat phosphate is used for the treatment of adults with Cushing's syndrome who either cannot undergo pituitary gland surgery or have undergone the surgery but still have the disease. It is taken orally, usually twice a day.
Side Effects[edit | edit source]
Like all medications, osilodrostat phosphate can cause side effects. The most common side effects include nausea, headache, fatigue, and adrenal insufficiency. In rare cases, it can cause abnormal heart rhythms.
Regulatory Status[edit | edit source]
Osilodrostat phosphate was approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) in the United States in 2020. It is also approved for use in the European Union and other countries.
