Ozena

Ozena is a medical condition characterized by a foul-smelling nasal discharge, atrophy of the nasal mucosa, and crusting. It is also known as atrophic rhinitis and is a form of chronic rhinitis. The exact cause of ozena is unknown, but it is thought to be related to poor hygiene, malnutrition, or bacterial infection.

Symptoms[edit | edit source]

The main symptoms of ozena include:

  • Foul-smelling nasal discharge
  • Atrophy of the nasal mucosa
  • Crusting in the nose
  • Nasal obstruction
  • Nosebleeds
  • Loss of smell

Causes[edit | edit source]

The exact cause of ozena is unknown. However, it is thought to be related to:

  • Poor hygiene
  • Malnutrition
  • Bacterial infection, particularly with Klebsiella ozaenae

Diagnosis[edit | edit source]

Diagnosis of ozena is based on the symptoms and physical examination of the nose. The doctor may also take a swab of the nasal discharge for laboratory testing.

Treatment[edit | edit source]

Treatment of ozena involves improving hygiene, treating any underlying malnutrition, and using antibiotics to treat any bacterial infection. In severe cases, surgery may be required to remove the affected nasal tissue.
