PPARGC1B

From WikiMD's Wellness Encyclopedia

PPARGC1B (Peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor gamma coactivator 1-beta) is a protein that in humans is encoded by the PPARGC1B gene. This protein is a member of the PPARGC1 family of transcriptional coactivators and plays a crucial role in regulating cellular energy metabolism.

Function[edit | edit source]

PPARGC1B is a transcriptional coactivator that regulates the genes involved in energy metabolism. This protein interacts with the nuclear receptor PPAR-gamma, which permits the interaction of this protein with multiple transcription factors. This protein can interact with, and regulate the activities of, cAMP response element binding protein (CREB) and nuclear respiratory factors (NRFs). It provides a direct link between external physiological stimuli and the regulation of mitochondrial biogenesis, and is a major factor that regulates muscle fiber type determination.

Clinical significance[edit | edit source]

Alterations in the PPARGC1B gene have been associated with type 2 diabetes, obesity, and hypertension. It has also been implicated in the pathogenesis of several types of cancer, including breast cancer and colorectal cancer.

Research[edit | edit source]

Research into the PPARGC1B gene and its associated protein continues to be a significant focus in the field of molecular biology. Understanding the precise mechanisms by which this protein functions could lead to new treatments for a variety of diseases.
