Pardis Sabeti
Pardis Sabeti is an Iranian-American computational biologist, geneticist, and evolutionary biologist. She is a professor at Harvard University and a member of the Broad Institute. Sabeti is known for her work in developing algorithms to detect natural selection in the genome and for her contributions to the understanding of infectious diseases.
Early Life and Education[edit | edit source]
Pardis Sabeti was born in Tehran, Iran, and moved to the United States with her family at a young age. She attended the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), where she earned her Bachelor of Science degree in biology. Sabeti then went on to receive her Ph.D. in evolutionary biology from the University of Oxford as a Rhodes Scholar. She also holds an M.D. from Harvard Medical School.
Career[edit | edit source]
Sabeti's research focuses on the development of computational methods to detect genetic variation and the study of pathogen evolution. She has made significant contributions to the understanding of the Ebola virus and Lassa fever. Her work has been instrumental in identifying genetic factors that influence the spread and severity of these diseases.
At the Broad Institute, Sabeti leads a research group that uses advanced computational techniques to analyze large-scale genomic data. Her team has developed several algorithms that are widely used in the field of genomics.
Contributions to Science[edit | edit source]
Sabeti's research has led to several important discoveries in the field of infectious disease genomics. She has identified genetic markers associated with resistance to malaria and has studied the genetic diversity of the Ebola virus during the West African Ebola epidemic. Her work has provided valuable insights into the mechanisms of pathogen evolution and the role of genetic variation in disease susceptibility.
Awards and Honors[edit | edit source]
Pardis Sabeti has received numerous awards and honors for her contributions to science, including the NIH Director's New Innovator Award, the Packard Fellowship for Science and Engineering, and the Howard Hughes Medical Institute Investigator Award. She has also been recognized as one of TIME magazine's 100 Most Influential People.
Personal Life[edit | edit source]
In addition to her scientific work, Sabeti is a musician and the lead singer of the rock band Thousand Days. She is also involved in various outreach and educational activities, promoting the importance of science and research to the general public.
