Pinocembrin
Pinocembrin is a natural flavonoid, a type of phytochemical found in a variety of plants. It is one of the primary flavonoids isolated from propolis, a resinous substance collected by honeybees from tree buds and used in the construction of hives. Pinocembrin has been studied for its potential health benefits, including its antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, antimicrobial, and neuroprotective properties.
Chemical Structure and Properties[edit | edit source]
Pinocembrin is a flavanone, a subclass of flavonoids that are characterized by the absence of a double bond in the C2-C3 position and the lack of a hydroxyl group in the C3 position of their chemical structure. Its chemical formula is C15H12O4. It is a yellow crystalline powder that is soluble in ethanol and methanol, but insoluble in water.
Sources[edit | edit source]
Pinocembrin is found in a variety of plants, including Eucalyptus, Populus, Spartium, and Alpinia. It is also one of the primary flavonoids found in propolis, a resinous substance collected by honeybees from tree buds.
Potential Health Benefits[edit | edit source]
Pinocembrin has been studied for its potential health benefits. It has been found to have antioxidant properties, meaning it can neutralize harmful free radicals in the body. It also has anti-inflammatory properties, which may help reduce inflammation and pain. Additionally, it has antimicrobial properties, meaning it can kill or inhibit the growth of bacteria and other microorganisms.
Pinocembrin has also been studied for its potential neuroprotective properties. Some research suggests that it may help protect the brain from damage caused by stroke or neurodegenerative diseases like Alzheimer's disease.
Safety and Side Effects[edit | edit source]
While pinocembrin is generally considered safe, it can cause side effects in some people. These can include allergic reactions, nausea, and diarrhea. It may also interact with certain medications, so it's important to talk to a healthcare provider before starting any new supplement regimen.
