Propionibacterium propionicus

From WikiMD's Food, Medicine & Wellness Encyclopedia

Propionibacterium propionicus is a species of bacteria that belongs to the genus Propionibacterium. It is a Gram-positive, anaerobic, rod-shaped bacterium that is commonly found in the human oral cavity and gastrointestinal tract. In this article, we will explore the characteristics, habitat, and significance of Propionibacterium propionicus.

Characteristics[edit | edit source]

Propionibacterium propionicus is a facultative anaerobe, meaning it can survive in both oxygen-rich and oxygen-poor environments. It is non-motile and does not form spores. The bacterium is catalase-positive, which means it produces the enzyme catalase to break down hydrogen peroxide. It also produces propionic acid as a metabolic byproduct, which gives it its name.

Habitat[edit | edit source]

Propionibacterium propionicus is commonly found in the oral cavity, particularly in the gingival crevices and dental plaque. It can also be found in the gastrointestinal tract, where it plays a role in the fermentation of dietary fiber. The bacterium thrives in the anaerobic conditions of these environments, utilizing various carbohydrates as a source of energy.

Significance[edit | edit source]

Propionibacterium propionicus is considered a commensal bacterium, meaning it normally coexists with its host without causing harm. However, under certain circumstances, it can become pathogenic and cause infections. It has been associated with various oral infections, including periodontitis and dental abscesses. In addition, it has been implicated in cases of endocarditis, a serious infection of the heart valves.
