Psilocybe caerulescens is a species of psilocybin mushroom in the family Hymenogastraceae. It is known for its psychoactive properties, which are primarily due to the presence of psilocybin and psilocin. This species is commonly referred to as the "Landslide Mushroom" or "Derrumbes" in Spanish.

Description[edit | edit source]

Psilocybe caerulescens has a distinctive appearance. The cap is typically 1.5 to 5 cm in diameter, conical to convex in shape, and often has a slight umbo. The color of the cap ranges from brown to yellowish-brown, often with a bluish tint when bruised. The gills are adnate to adnexed, close, and initially pale brown, becoming darker with age as the spores mature.

The stipe is 4 to 12 cm long, 2 to 4 mm thick, and usually has a whitish to yellowish color, also bruising blue when handled. The spore print is dark purplish-brown. Microscopically, the spores are ellipsoid, smooth, and measure 8-12 by 5-8 micrometers.

Habitat and Distribution[edit | edit source]

Psilocybe caerulescens is typically found in tropical and subtropical regions. It grows in deciduous forests, often in areas that have been disturbed by landslides or other natural events, which is why it is commonly called the "Landslide Mushroom." This species is known to occur in countries such as Mexico, Costa Rica, and parts of the United States.

Psychoactive Properties[edit | edit source]

The psychoactive effects of Psilocybe caerulescens are due to the presence of psilocybin and psilocin, which are tryptamine alkaloids. These compounds interact with serotonin receptors in the brain, leading to altered states of consciousness, visual and auditory hallucinations, and changes in perception and mood. The intensity and duration of the effects can vary depending on the dosage and individual sensitivity.

Cultural Significance[edit | edit source]

Psilocybe caerulescens has been used traditionally by indigenous peoples in Mexico for spiritual and religious purposes. It is often consumed in shamanic rituals to induce visionary states and facilitate communication with the spiritual world.

Legal Status[edit | edit source]

The legal status of Psilocybe caerulescens varies by country. In many places, the possession, sale, and use of psilocybin-containing mushrooms are illegal. However, some countries and regions have decriminalized or legalized their use for medical or religious purposes.
