Queens Community Board 8
Queens Community Board 8 (CB8) is a local government body in the New York City borough of Queens, responsible for advising on land use and zoning, among other community concerns. It encompasses the neighborhoods of Fresh Meadows, Kew Gardens Hills, Jamaica Estates, and Holliswood, as well as portions of Jamaica, Flushing, Hillcrest, and Briarwood.
History[edit | edit source]
The establishment of Community Boards in New York City was a result of the 1975 revision of the New York City Charter, which sought to improve democratic control over local resources and decisions. Queens Community Board 8, like other community boards, was created to provide local residents with a voice in the city's land use and budget processes.
Responsibilities[edit | edit source]
Queens Community Board 8 is responsible for advising on land use and zoning matters, the city budget, municipal service delivery, and many other matters relating to the welfare of the community. It reviews applications for zoning changes, city budget recommendations, and coordinates with city agencies to ensure adequate service delivery.
Structure[edit | edit source]
The board is composed of up to 50 volunteer members appointed by the Queens Borough President, half of whom are nominated by the City Council Members who represent the community district. The board has a District Manager who oversees the delivery of city services and handles complaints and service requests from community residents.
Meetings[edit | edit source]
Community Board 8 holds monthly meetings that are open to the public. These meetings often feature presentations from various city agencies, elected officials, and other relevant parties. They also provide a forum for residents to voice their concerns and issues directly to their elected representatives and city officials.
