Sha'ar Menashe was originally established in 1949 as a camp for the first absorption of immigrants from Yemen and Iraq. It also served as a village for elderly people. Over the years, it has transformed into a psychiatric medical centre. In 2007, the hospital had 1,100 patients and was the largest psychiatric institution in Israel.
