The Sheffield Scientific School was a part of Yale University in New Haven, Connecticut, which was founded in 1847 as a school of science and engineering. It was named after Joseph Earl Sheffield, a major benefactor of the school. The Sheffield Scientific School played a significant role in the development of science and engineering education in the United States.

History[edit | edit source]

The Sheffield Scientific School was established in 1847 as the Yale Scientific School. In 1861, it was renamed in honor of Joseph Earl Sheffield, who donated a substantial sum of money to the school. The school initially focused on chemistry, mining, and civil engineering, but later expanded to include other fields of science and engineering.

In the late 19th and early 20th centuries, the Sheffield Scientific School was one of the leading scientific institutions in the United States. It attracted many prominent scientists and engineers, including Josiah Willard Gibbs, a pioneer in thermodynamics and physical chemistry.

Integration with Yale College[edit | edit source]

In 1956, the Sheffield Scientific School was fully integrated into Yale College, and its programs were merged with those of the college. The name "Sheffield Scientific School" is no longer used, but its legacy continues through the Yale School of Engineering & Applied Science.
