Sterling Memorial Library
Sterling Memorial Library is the main library of Yale University in New Haven, Connecticut. It is one of the largest libraries in the United States and serves as the primary library for the university's students, faculty, and staff.
History[edit | edit source]
Sterling Memorial Library was designed by architect James Gamble Rogers and completed in 1930. The library was named in honor of John William Sterling, a Yale alumnus and benefactor, whose bequest funded its construction. The building's design is a notable example of the Collegiate Gothic architectural style, which was popular for academic buildings in the early 20th century.
Architecture[edit | edit source]
The library's exterior features a combination of Gothic Revival and Art Deco elements. The interior includes a grand nave, which serves as the main reading room, and is adorned with stained glass windows, intricate woodwork, and stone carvings. The library's tower, which rises 120 feet above the ground, is a prominent feature of the Yale campus skyline.

Sterling Memorial Library houses over 4 million volumes, including rare books, manuscripts, and special collections. The library's holdings cover a wide range of subjects, with particular strengths in the humanities, social sciences, and area studies. Notable collections include the Beinecke Rare Book & Manuscript Library, the Yale Babylonian Collection, and the Yale Collection of American Literature.
