Simon Boulton is a prominent British scientist known for his significant contributions to the field of DNA repair and genomic stability. He is currently a Senior Group Leader at the Francis Crick Institute in London and an honorary professor at University College London.

Early Life and Education[edit | edit source]

Simon Boulton was born in the United Kingdom. He completed his undergraduate studies in Biochemistry at the University of Oxford. He then pursued a Ph.D. in Molecular Biology at the University of Cambridge, where he worked under the supervision of Steve Jackson.

Career[edit | edit source]

After completing his Ph.D., Boulton undertook postdoctoral research at the Harvard Medical School in the laboratory of Stephen Elledge. During this time, he made significant discoveries in the field of DNA damage response.

In 2002, Boulton returned to the UK to establish his own research group at the Cancer Research UK London Research Institute, which later became part of the Francis Crick Institute. His research focuses on understanding the mechanisms of DNA repair and how defects in these processes contribute to cancer and other diseases.

Research Contributions[edit | edit source]

Boulton's research has led to several groundbreaking discoveries in the field of DNA repair. His work has elucidated the roles of various proteins and pathways involved in maintaining genomic stability. Notably, his research has provided insights into the function of the BRCA1 and BRCA2 genes, which are crucial for homologous recombination repair.

Awards and Honors[edit | edit source]

Simon Boulton has received numerous awards for his contributions to science, including the EMBO Gold Medal and the Paul Marks Prize for Cancer Research. He is also a Fellow of the Academy of Medical Sciences.

Personal Life[edit | edit source]

Boulton is married and has two children. He is an advocate for science education and frequently participates in public outreach activities to promote understanding of scientific research.
