Spider nevus

From WikiMD's Food, Medicine & Wellness Encyclopedia

Spider nevus (also known as spider angioma or vascular spider) is a type of telangiectasis (swollen blood vessels) found slightly beneath the skin surface, often containing a central red spot and reddish extensions which radiate outwards like a spider's web. They are common and can be found anywhere on the body.

Causes[edit | edit source]

Spider nevi are caused by a high concentration of the hormone estrogen. They are common in pregnancy and in individuals with cirrhosis of the liver. They can also be influenced by the level of nitric oxide and angiogenic factors in the body.

Symptoms[edit | edit source]

The primary symptom of a spider nevus is a red, spider-like mark on the skin. They can also cause mild itching and discomfort.

Diagnosis[edit | edit source]

Spider nevi are diagnosed through a physical examination. The doctor may apply pressure to the center of the nevus. If it blanches, or turns white, it is likely a spider nevus.

Treatment[edit | edit source]

Treatment is usually not necessary unless for cosmetic reasons or if they bleed. They can be removed by laser therapy or electrocauterization.
