Throat

The throat is the anterior part of the neck, positioned in front of the vertebra. It contains the pharynx and larynx. An important feature of the throat is the epiglottis, a flap that separates the esophagus from the trachea and prevents inhalation of food or drink.

Anatomy[edit | edit source]

The throat comprises of the pharynx and larynx.

Pharynx[edit | edit source]

The pharynx is a part of the throat that is responsible for transporting food from the mouth to the esophagus and air from the nasal cavity to the larynx. The pharynx is divided into three sections: the nasopharynx, oropharynx, and laryngopharynx.

Larynx[edit | edit source]

The larynx, also known as the voice box, is located below the pharynx in the throat. It is involved in breathing, sound production, and protection of the trachea against food aspiration.

Health issues[edit | edit source]

Various health issues can affect the throat, including tonsillitis, pharyngitis, laryngitis, cancer, and gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD).
