Tom Cavanagh (ice hockey)
Tom Cavanagh (January 24, 1982 – January 6, 2011) was an American professional ice hockey player. He played in the National Hockey League (NHL) for the San Jose Sharks.
Early Life[edit | edit source]
Cavanagh was born in Warwick, Rhode Island. He attended Phillips Exeter Academy and later Harvard University, where he played for the Harvard Crimson men's ice hockey team. During his time at Harvard, he was known for his skill and dedication on the ice.
Professional Career[edit | edit source]
After graduating from Harvard, Cavanagh signed with the San Jose Sharks as an undrafted free agent. He made his NHL debut with the Sharks during the 2007–08 NHL season. Over the course of his career, he also played for the Worcester Sharks in the American Hockey League (AHL), the Manchester Monarchs (AHL), and the Springfield Falcons.
Personal Life[edit | edit source]
Cavanagh was known for his intelligence and work ethic both on and off the ice. He was diagnosed with schizophrenia and struggled with the condition throughout his life. His battle with mental illness was a significant part of his life story.
Death[edit | edit source]
Tom Cavanagh passed away on January 6, 2011, in Providence, Rhode Island. His death was ruled a suicide. His passing brought attention to the mental health struggles faced by professional athletes.

Cavanagh is remembered for his contributions to the sport of ice hockey and his courage in facing personal challenges. His story has been an inspiration for discussions on mental health awareness in sports.
