University of Rwanda

The University of Rwanda (UR) is the largest higher education institution in Rwanda, formed through the merger of previously independent public institutions of higher education in 2013. It plays a pivotal role in the country's education sector, offering a wide range of undergraduate and postgraduate programs across various faculties including Medicine, Engineering, Education, Agriculture, Business, and Social Sciences among others. The university is committed to producing competent and skilled professionals who can contribute to the socio-economic development of Rwanda and beyond.

The University of Rwanda was established in September 2013, following a government decision to merge the existing public higher education institutions in Rwanda into a single entity. This strategic move was aimed at streamlining the management of higher education and ensuring the efficient use of resources. The institutions that were merged include the National University of Rwanda (NUR), Kigali Institute of Science and Technology (KIST), Kigali Institute of Education (KIE), and others, each bringing its strengths and specialties into the new conglomerate.

UR operates across multiple campuses spread throughout the country, each focusing on specific areas of study. The main campus is located in Butare, in the Southern Province, which houses the headquarters and the College of Medicine and Health Sciences. Other notable campuses include the College of Science and Technology in Kigali, the College of Education in Kigali, and the College of Agriculture, Animal Sciences and Veterinary Medicine in Musanze.
