The University of the Republic (Spanish: Universidad de la República ), often abbreviated as UdelaR, is the oldest and largest university in Uruguay. It was established on July 18, 1849, and is located in the capital city of Montevideo. The university is a public institution and is funded by the Government of Uruguay.

The University of the Republic was founded by an act of the General Assembly of Uruguay on July 18, 1849. The first rector was Lorenzo Fernández, and the initial faculties included law, medicine, and theology. Over the years, the university expanded to include a wide range of disciplines and faculties.
