Uterus Cancer

Uterus cancer, also known as endometrial cancer, is a type of cancer that begins in the uterus. The uterus is a hollow, pear-shaped pelvic organ where fetal development occurs. Uterus cancer is the most common cancer of the female reproductive system in developed countries.

Types of Uterus Cancer[edit | edit source]

There are two main types of uterus cancer: Endometrial cancer and Uterine sarcoma. Endometrial cancer is the most common type and begins in the layer of cells that form the lining (endometrium) of the uterus. Uterine sarcoma is a rare type of uterus cancer that forms in the muscle and tissue that support the uterus.

Symptoms[edit | edit source]

Symptoms of uterus cancer may include vaginal bleeding after menopause, bleeding between periods, an abnormal, watery or blood-tinged discharge from your vagina, pelvic pain, or pain during intercourse.

Causes[edit | edit source]

While the exact cause of uterus cancer is unknown, certain factors may increase the risk of developing the disease. These include age, obesity, certain inherited colon cancer syndromes, and use of estrogen therapy without progesterone.

Diagnosis[edit | edit source]

Diagnosis of uterus cancer typically involves a pelvic exam, a transvaginal ultrasound, and an endometrial biopsy. In some cases, a hysteroscopy may be used to examine the uterus and take tissue samples.

Treatment[edit | edit source]

Treatment options for uterus cancer depend on several factors, including the type and stage of the cancer, the patient's overall health, and personal preferences. Treatment may involve surgery, radiation therapy, chemotherapy, hormone therapy, or targeted therapy.

Prevention[edit | edit source]

While it's not possible to prevent uterus cancer entirely, certain lifestyle changes can reduce the risk. These include maintaining a healthy weight, regular exercise, and balanced diet.
