Winnebago County is a county located in the U.S. state of Wisconsin. As of the 2020 census, the population was 171,730. Its county seat is Oshkosh. The county was created in 1840 and organized in 1848.

Winnebago County was established in 1840 and named after the Winnebago (Ho-Chunk) people who originally inhabited the area. The county was organized in 1848, the same year that Wisconsin became a state.
Geography[edit | edit source]
According to the United States Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 579 square miles (1,500 km²), of which 434 square miles (1,120 km²) is land and 145 square miles (380 km²) (25%) is water. The county is home to several lakes, including Lake Winnebago, the largest lake in the state.

Winnebago County is served by several school districts, including the Oshkosh Area School District, the Neenah Joint School District, and the Menasha Joint School District. Higher education institutions include the University of Wisconsin–Oshkosh.

Major highways in Winnebago County include Interstate 41, U.S. Route 41, U.S. Route 45, and Wisconsin Highway 21. The county is also served by the Wittman Regional Airport.
