M. Zuhdi Jasser is an American physician, political commentator, and activist known for his advocacy of Islamic reform and his criticism of Islamism. He is the founder and president of the American Islamic Forum for Democracy (AIFD), an organization that promotes the separation of mosque and state.

Early life and education[edit | edit source]

Jasser was born in Ohio to Syrian immigrant parents. His family fled Syria in the mid-1960s due to political unrest. Jasser grew up in Wisconsin, where he developed an interest in medicine and public service. He attended the University of Wisconsin–Milwaukee, where he earned his undergraduate degree in biochemistry. He then pursued a medical degree at the Medical College of Wisconsin.

Medical career[edit | edit source]

After completing his medical education, Jasser served as a physician in the United States Navy, where he achieved the rank of Lieutenant Commander. During his service, he was stationed at the National Naval Medical Center in Bethesda, Maryland, and later served as the staff internist for the USS El Paso. Following his military service, Jasser established a private medical practice in Phoenix, Arizona, specializing in internal medicine and nuclear cardiology.

Advocacy and activism[edit | edit source]

Jasser is a prominent advocate for the separation of mosque and state and has been vocal in his criticism of political Islam. In 2003, he founded the American Islamic Forum for Democracy (AIFD) to promote the principles of liberal democracy and individual liberty within the Muslim community. The AIFD seeks to counter the influence of Islamist ideologies and promote a modern interpretation of Islam that is compatible with Western values.

Jasser has been a frequent commentator on issues related to Islam, terrorism, and national security. He has appeared on various media outlets, including Fox News, CNN, and MSNBC, and has written for publications such as The Wall Street Journal and The Washington Times.

Political involvement[edit | edit source]

In addition to his work with the AIFD, Jasser has been involved in various governmental and non-governmental initiatives. He served on the United States Commission on International Religious Freedom from 2012 to 2016, where he advocated for the protection of religious freedoms worldwide. Jasser has also been involved in efforts to combat radicalization and promote counter-terrorism strategies.

Criticism and controversy[edit | edit source]

Jasser's views have been met with both support and criticism. Some members of the Muslim community have criticized him for his outspoken stance against Islamism and his support for U.S. foreign policy in the Middle East. However, he has also received praise from those who support his efforts to promote a moderate and reformist interpretation of Islam.
