3-Methyl-2-pentanol is an organic compound with the chemical formula C6H14O. It is a secondary alcohol and is also known by the name isohexanol. This compound is one of the isomers of hexanol.

Structure and Properties[edit | edit source]

3-Methyl-2-pentanol has a branched chain structure with a hydroxyl group (-OH) attached to the second carbon atom. The molecular weight of 3-Methyl-2-pentanol is 102.174 g/mol. It has a density of 0.824 g/cm³, a melting point of -70 °C, and a boiling point of 131-132 °C.

3-Methyl-2-pentanol can be synthesized through various chemical reactions, including the hydration of 3-methyl-2-pentene or the reduction of 3-methyl-2-pentanone.

This compound is used in the chemical industry as a solvent and an intermediate in the synthesis of other chemicals. It is also used in the production of plasticizers, lubricants, and surfactants.
