CYP2C18
CYP2C18 is a member of the cytochrome P450 superfamily of enzymes. These enzymes are involved in the metabolism of various substances within the body, including drugs, toxins, and endogenous compounds. The CYP2C18 gene is located on chromosome 10q24 within a cluster of other cytochrome P450 genes.
Function[edit | edit source]
CYP2C18 is primarily expressed in the liver and is involved in the oxidative metabolism of a variety of substrates. This enzyme plays a role in the metabolism of xenobiotics, which are foreign substances such as drugs and environmental chemicals. The specific substrates and reactions catalyzed by CYP2C18 are not as well characterized as those of other CYP2C enzymes, such as CYP2C9 and CYP2C19.
Genetics[edit | edit source]
The CYP2C18 gene is part of the CYP2C subfamily, which includes CYP2C8, CYP2C9, and CYP2C19. These genes are located in a cluster on chromosome 10q24. Genetic polymorphisms in CYP2C18 can lead to variations in enzyme activity, which may affect the metabolism of certain drugs and the susceptibility to adverse drug reactions.
Clinical Significance[edit | edit source]
Although CYP2C18 is less studied compared to other CYP2C enzymes, it is believed to contribute to the metabolism of certain therapeutic drugs. Variations in the CYP2C18 gene may influence individual responses to medications and the risk of drug interactions. Further research is needed to fully understand the clinical implications of CYP2C18 activity.
