Carl Edvard Marius Levy (1808–1865) was a prominent Danish physician and obstetrician. He is best known for his contributions to the field of obstetrics and his role in advancing medical education in Denmark.

Carl Edvard Marius Levy was born on 1 January 1808 in Copenhagen, Denmark. He pursued his medical studies at the University of Copenhagen, where he graduated with a degree in medicine in 1833. During his studies, Levy showed a particular interest in obstetrics and gynecology, which would later become his primary field of expertise.

After completing his education, Levy worked at various hospitals in Copenhagen, gaining extensive experience in obstetrics. In 1840, he was appointed as a lecturer at the University of Copenhagen, where he taught courses in obstetrics and gynecology. His lectures were highly regarded, and he played a significant role in shaping the curriculum for medical students.

In 1841, Levy became the chief physician at the Royal Maternity Hospital in Copenhagen. Under his leadership, the hospital saw numerous advancements in the care of pregnant women and the management of childbirth. Levy was a strong advocate for the use of antiseptic techniques in obstetrics, which significantly reduced the incidence of puerperal fever among new mothers.

Levy made several important contributions to the field of obstetrics. He was one of the first physicians in Denmark to promote the use of chloroform as an anesthetic during childbirth, which greatly improved the experience for laboring women. Additionally, he developed new methods for the management of complicated deliveries, including the use of forceps and other instruments.

Levy also conducted research on the causes and prevention of puerperal fever, a common and often fatal infection that affected women after childbirth. His work in this area helped to establish the importance of hygiene and antiseptic practices in obstetric care.
