Fiona Watt was born in Edinburgh, Scotland. She completed her undergraduate studies in Natural Sciences at Cambridge University. She then pursued her PhD at the University of Oxford, where she focused on cell biology.

After completing her PhD, Watt conducted postdoctoral research at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) in the United States. She later returned to the United Kingdom and joined the Imperial Cancer Research Fund (now part of Cancer Research UK), where she began her pioneering work on epidermal stem cells.

Watt has held several prestigious positions throughout her career. She was a professor at the University of Cambridge and later became the Director of the Centre for Stem Cells and Regenerative Medicine at King's College London. In 2018, she was appointed as the Executive Chair of the Medical Research Council (MRC).
