Jamaica Estates, Queens

Jamaica Estates, Queens is a wealthy, predominantly residential neighborhood located in the borough of Queens, in New York City. It is bordered by Union Turnpike to the south, Hillside Avenue to the north, Utopia Parkway and Homelawn Street to the west, and 188th Street to the east.

The development of Jamaica Estates was conceived in the early 20th century by the Jamaica Estates Company, which aimed to create a garden city-style community for the upper middle class. The company purchased land from the estate of William K. Vanderbilt, among others, and began construction in 1907. The neighborhood was designed with winding roads to preserve the many trees that existed before development.

Architecture[edit | edit source]

Jamaica Estates is known for its diverse architectural styles, which include Tudor Revival, Colonial Revival, and Craftsman. Many of the homes are detached, single-family dwellings, a rarity in New York City.

Demographics[edit | edit source]

The neighborhood is home to a diverse population, with a significant number of Jewish, Asian, and Hispanic residents. It is also known for its large number of professionals, including doctors, lawyers, and business owners.

Education[edit | edit source]

Jamaica Estates is served by the New York City Department of Education, with several public and private schools located within the neighborhood. It is also home to St. John's University, a private, Roman Catholic university.

Transportation[edit | edit source]

Public transportation in Jamaica Estates is provided by the Metropolitan Transportation Authority, which operates several bus routes through the neighborhood. The F train also has a stop at 179th Street, providing direct access to Manhattan.

Notable residents[edit | edit source]

Several notable individuals have resided in Jamaica Estates, including Donald Trump, the 45th President of the United States, who grew up in the neighborhood.
