Joia Mukherjee was born in the United States. She completed her undergraduate studies at University of Michigan, where she earned a Bachelor of Science degree. She then attended University of Minnesota Medical School, where she received her Doctor of Medicine (MD) degree. Mukherjee also holds a Master of Public Health (MPH) degree from the Harvard T.H. Mukherjee began her career in global health as a resident in internal medicine and pediatrics at the Brigham and Women's Hospital and Boston Children's Hospital.
