Laura Jeanne Kelly (born January 24, 1950) is an American politician serving as the 48th Governor of Kansas. A member of the Democratic Party, she was elected in 2018 and took office on January 14, 2019. Prior to her governorship, Kelly served in the Kansas Senate from 2005 to 2019, representing the 18th district.

Laura Kelly was born in New York City, New York. She earned a Bachelor of Science degree in psychology from Bradley University in Peoria, Illinois, and a Master of Science in therapeutic recreation from Indiana University.

Before entering politics, Kelly worked in the field of therapeutic recreation, focusing on improving the quality of life for individuals with disabilities. Her work in this area laid the foundation for her interest in public service and policy.

Kelly was first elected to the Kansas Senate in 2004, where she served until 2019. During her tenure, she was known for her work on health care, education, and fiscal responsibility.
