Leonidas C. Platanias is a prominent oncologist and researcher known for his contributions to the field of cancer research, particularly in the study of cytokine signaling pathways and their role in cancer development and treatment. He is the director of the Robert H. Lurie Comprehensive Cancer Center at Northwestern University in Chicago, Illinois.

Early life and education[edit | edit source]

Leonidas Platanias was born in Greece. He pursued his medical education at the University of Patras, where he earned his MD degree. Following his medical training, he completed a PhD in biochemistry at the University of Athens.

Career[edit | edit source]

Platanias began his career in the United States, where he completed a residency in internal medicine at the State University of New York at Buffalo. He then pursued a fellowship in hematology and oncology at the University of Chicago.

In 2002, Platanias joined the faculty at Northwestern University, where he has held various positions, including the Jesse, Sara, Andrew, Abigail, Benjamin, and Elizabeth Lurie Professor of Oncology. In 2014, he was appointed as the director of the Robert H. Lurie Comprehensive Cancer Center, where he oversees a wide range of research and clinical activities.

Platanias's research focuses on the molecular mechanisms of cytokine signaling in cancer cells. His work has significantly advanced the understanding of how cytokines, such as interferons and interleukins, influence cancer cell growth and survival. He has published extensively on the role of STAT proteins and other signaling molecules in cancer.
