Median Rhomboid Glossitis

Median Rhomboid Glossitis (MRG) is a condition characterized by an area of redness and loss of lingual papillae, situated on the midline of the dorsal surface of the tongue. It is a type of glossitis and is thought to be caused by a chronic fungal infection, often Candida species.

Etiology[edit | edit source]

The exact cause of MRG is unknown, but it is often associated with chronic infection by Candida species. Other factors that may contribute to the development of MRG include poor oral hygiene, smoking, and immunosuppression.

Clinical Features[edit | edit source]

MRG is typically asymptomatic and is often discovered during routine dental examinations. The condition is characterized by a smooth, red, oval or rhomboid shaped area on the midline of the dorsal surface of the tongue. The lesion is usually located just anterior to the circumvallate papillae.

Diagnosis[edit | edit source]

Diagnosis of MRG is primarily clinical, based on the characteristic appearance of the lesion. In some cases, a biopsy may be performed to rule out other conditions. Microscopic examination of the biopsy specimen may reveal hyperplastic squamous epithelium and chronic inflammatory cells.

Treatment[edit | edit source]

Treatment of MRG is usually not necessary unless the patient is symptomatic. In cases where the patient is experiencing discomfort, antifungal medications may be prescribed. Good oral hygiene practices are also recommended to prevent recurrence of the condition.

Prognosis[edit | edit source]

The prognosis for MRG is generally good. The condition is benign and does not pose a risk for malignancy. However, recurrence is common, particularly in patients with poor oral hygiene or those who continue to smoke.
