Metabolic Syndrome
Metabolic Syndrome is a cluster of conditions that occur together, increasing your risk of heart disease, stroke, and type 2 diabetes. These conditions include increased blood pressure, high blood sugar, excess body fat around the waist, and abnormal cholesterol or triglyceride levels.
Symptoms[edit | edit source]
Having metabolic syndrome means you have several disorders related to your metabolism at the same time, including:
- Obesity, particularly around your waist
- High blood pressure
- High blood sugar levels
- High triglyceride levels
- Low levels of good cholesterol
Causes[edit | edit source]
Metabolic syndrome is closely linked to overweight or obesity and inactivity. It's also linked to a condition called insulin resistance.
Diagnosis[edit | edit source]
To diagnose metabolic syndrome, most doctors look for the presence of three or more of these components:
- Central obesity
- High blood triglycerides
- Low levels of high-density lipoprotein (HDL) cholesterol
- High blood pressure
- High fasting glucose
