Mrs. Butterworth's
Mrs. Butterworth's is a popular brand of syrup and pancake mix in the United States, known for its distinctive bottle shape and sweet, rich flavor. The brand is currently owned by Conagra Brands, a packaged foods company based in Chicago, Illinois.
History[edit | edit source]
The Mrs. Butterworth's brand was first introduced in 1961 by the Glidden Company, a paint manufacturer that had diversified into food production. The brand was named after Thelma Butterworth, a fictional character created for the product's advertising campaign. The character was portrayed as a friendly, grandmotherly figure who loved making delicious syrup.
In 1986, the brand was acquired by Pinnacle Foods, a packaged foods company based in Parsippany, New Jersey. Under Pinnacle's ownership, the brand expanded its product line to include pancake mix and other breakfast foods.
In 2018, Pinnacle Foods was acquired by Conagra Brands, which continues to produce and distribute Mrs. Butterworth's products.
Products[edit | edit source]
Mrs. Butterworth's is best known for its syrup, which is available in several varieties, including Original, Lite, and Sugar Free. The syrup is packaged in a distinctive plastic bottle shaped like the character Mrs. Butterworth.
In addition to syrup, the brand also produces pancake mix, available in Original and Complete varieties. The Complete mix only requires the addition of water, while the Original mix requires eggs and milk as well.
In popular culture[edit | edit source]
Mrs. Butterworth's has been featured in numerous television commercials and print advertisements since its introduction. The character of Mrs. Butterworth is often depicted as speaking and moving, with the syrup bottle serving as her body.
The brand has also been referenced in various forms of media, including television shows, films, and songs, often as a symbol of homey, comforting sweetness.
