North American Eastern Time Zone
North American Eastern Time Zone is a time zone that covers the eastern part of the United States, parts of eastern Canada, the state of Quintana Roo in Mexico, Panama in Central America, and certain Caribbean and Atlantic islands.
Overview[edit | edit source]
The North American Eastern Time Zone is centered on the mean solar time of the 75th meridian west of the Greenwich Meridian. In the United States, the time zone includes the states on the east coast, including New York, Florida, and Georgia. In Canada, it covers most of Ontario, Quebec and parts of Nunavut.
Daylight Saving Time[edit | edit source]
Most regions in the North American Eastern Time Zone observe Daylight Saving Time, where clocks are set forward by one hour on the second Sunday in March and set back by one hour on the first Sunday in November. This is done to extend evening daylight during the warmer part of the year.
Standard Time[edit | edit source]
When not observing Daylight Saving Time, the North American Eastern Time Zone operates on Eastern Standard Time (EST), which is five hours behind Coordinated Universal Time (UTC−5). During Daylight Saving Time, it operates on Eastern Daylight Time (EDT), which is four hours behind Coordinated Universal Time (UTC−4).
Regions not observing Daylight Saving Time[edit | edit source]
Certain regions in the North American Eastern Time Zone do not observe Daylight Saving Time. These include most of the province of Quebec, the state of Arizona, and the U.S. territories of Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands.
