Phyllis M. Wise is an American biologist and academic administrator. She is known for her contributions to the field of neuroendocrinology and for her leadership roles in various academic institutions.

Phyllis Wise was born in New York City. She earned her B.A. degree in biology from Swarthmore College and her Ph.D. in zoology from the University of Michigan.

Academic Career[edit | edit source]

Wise began her academic career as a faculty member at the University of Maryland, College Park. She later joined the faculty at the University of Kentucky, where she served as the chair of the Department of Physiology. Her research focused on the interactions between the nervous system and the endocrine system, particularly in relation to reproductive health.

Phyllis Wise has held several significant administrative positions throughout her career. She served as the Dean of the College of Biological Sciences at the University of California, Davis. In 2005, she became the Provost and Executive Vice President at the University of Washington, where she also held a faculty position in the Department of Biology.

In 2011, Wise was appointed as the Chancellor of the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. During her tenure, she focused on enhancing the university's research capabilities, promoting diversity and inclusion, and improving the overall academic experience for students.
