Pisuviricota

From WikiMD's Food, Medicine & Wellnesspedia

Pisuviricota is a phylum of viruses that includes species which infect bacteria, archaea, and eukaryotes. The name of the phylum is derived from the Latin pisum, meaning "pea", and virus, meaning "poison". The phylum was established by the International Committee on Taxonomy of Viruses in 2019.

Taxonomy[edit | edit source]

The phylum Pisuviricota is divided into two kingdoms: Bamfordvirae, which includes viruses that infect bacteria and archaea, and Duplornavirae, which includes viruses that infect eukaryotes. These kingdoms are further divided into several classes, orders, families, and genera.

Characteristics[edit | edit source]

Viruses in the phylum Pisuviricota are characterized by their icosahedral symmetry and double-stranded DNA genomes. They are also known for their unique replication strategy, which involves the formation of a viral factory within the host cell.

Pathogenesis[edit | edit source]

Some viruses in the phylum Pisuviricota are known to cause diseases in their hosts. For example, the White spot syndrome virus, a member of the family Nimaviridae, is a major pathogen of shrimp and other crustaceans.
