Shiitake Mushroom Dermatitis is a type of skin irritation caused by the consumption or handling of raw or undercooked Shiitake mushrooms. This condition is also known as Shiitake Dermatitis, Shiitake Flagellate Dermatitis, or Toxicoderma.

Symptoms[edit | edit source]

The primary symptom of Shiitake Mushroom Dermatitis is an itchy, red rash that often appears in a linear or flagellate pattern. This rash typically develops within 24 to 48 hours after exposure to the mushrooms. Other symptoms may include fever, chills, and digestive issues.

Causes[edit | edit source]

Shiitake Mushroom Dermatitis is caused by a compound called lentinan, which is found in raw or undercooked Shiitake mushrooms. Lentinan is a polysaccharide that can cause an inflammatory response in the skin when ingested or touched.

Diagnosis[edit | edit source]

Diagnosis of Shiitake Mushroom Dermatitis is typically based on the characteristic appearance of the rash and a history of recent Shiitake mushroom consumption or exposure. In some cases, a skin biopsy may be performed to confirm the diagnosis.

Treatment[edit | edit source]

Treatment for Shiitake Mushroom Dermatitis primarily involves avoiding further exposure to Shiitake mushrooms. Over-the-counter antihistamines and topical corticosteroids can help to alleviate the symptoms. In severe cases, prescription medications may be required.

Prevention[edit | edit source]

The best way to prevent Shiitake Mushroom Dermatitis is to avoid consuming or handling raw or undercooked Shiitake mushrooms. Cooking the mushrooms thoroughly can help to break down the lentinan and reduce the risk of dermatitis.
