Thyroid neoplasms
Thyroid neoplasms are tumors or growths of the thyroid gland, which are classified into benign and malignant types. The thyroid gland is a butterfly-shaped organ located in the front of the neck, and it produces hormones that regulate the body's metabolism.
Types of Thyroid Neoplasms[edit | edit source]
There are several types of thyroid neoplasms, including:
- Papillary thyroid carcinoma: This is the most common type of thyroid cancer, accounting for about 80% of all cases. It grows very slowly and is often curable.
- Follicular thyroid carcinoma: This type accounts for about 10% to 15% of all thyroid cancers. It is more aggressive than papillary thyroid carcinoma and is more likely to spread to other parts of the body.
- Medullary thyroid carcinoma: This type accounts for about 3% of all thyroid cancers. It is often associated with genetic syndromes, including Multiple Endocrine Neoplasia type 2 (MEN 2).
- Anaplastic thyroid carcinoma: This is a rare but very aggressive type of thyroid cancer that often spreads rapidly to other parts of the body.
Symptoms[edit | edit source]
Symptoms of thyroid neoplasms can vary depending on the type and stage of the disease. Common symptoms include a lump in the neck, difficulty swallowing, hoarseness, and changes in voice.
Diagnosis[edit | edit source]
Diagnosis of thyroid neoplasms typically involves a physical examination, blood tests, imaging tests, and a biopsy. The Fine-needle aspiration (FNA) biopsy is the most common method used to diagnose thyroid cancer.
Treatment[edit | edit source]
Treatment options for thyroid neoplasms depend on the type and stage of the disease, as well as the patient's overall health. Treatment options may include surgery, radioactive iodine therapy, hormone therapy, radiation therapy, chemotherapy, or targeted therapy.
Prognosis[edit | edit source]
The prognosis for patients with thyroid neoplasms varies widely depending on the type and stage of the disease. In general, the prognosis for patients with papillary and follicular thyroid carcinomas is excellent, while the prognosis for patients with anaplastic thyroid carcinoma is often poor.
