7α-methylestr-4-ene-3,17-dione

From WikiMD's Food, Medicine & Wellness Encyclopedia

7α-Methylestr-4-ene-3,17-dione is a steroid that is classified as a prohormone. It is also known as 7-alpha-methyl-19-nortestosterone (MENT), a synthetic, orally active anabolic-androgenic steroid (AAS) that is used in androgen replacement therapy (ART) mainly for the treatment of male hypogonadism.

Chemical Structure and Properties[edit | edit source]

7α-Methylestr-4-ene-3,17-dione is a derivative of nandrolone. It has a methyl group added at the 7-alpha position. This modification enhances the androgenic potency of the steroid and its oral bioavailability. The chemical formula of 7α-Methylestr-4-ene-3,17-dione is C20H28O2 and its molecular weight is 300.44 g/mol.

Pharmacology[edit | edit source]

7α-Methylestr-4-ene-3,17-dione is converted in the body to its active form, 7α-methyl-19-nortestosterone. This active metabolite binds to and activates the androgen receptor, exerting its androgenic and anabolic effects. It has a higher affinity for the androgen receptor compared to testosterone and nandrolone, and does not bind to sex hormone-binding globulin (SHBG), which makes it more bioavailable.

Medical Uses[edit | edit source]

7α-Methylestr-4-ene-3,17-dione is used in androgen replacement therapy mainly for the treatment of male hypogonadism. It is also being investigated for potential use in male contraception.

Side Effects[edit | edit source]

Potential side effects of 7α-Methylestr-4-ene-3,17-dione include acne, hair loss, prostate enlargement, and increased risk of cardiovascular disease. As with all anabolic steroids, there is also the risk of psychological dependence.
