Ana Mari Cauce
Ana Mari Cauce (born January 11, 1956) is a Cuban-American psychologist, professor, and the 33rd President of the University of Washington. She was appointed as president on October 13, 2015, after serving as interim president since March 2015. Cauce is the first permanent woman president and the first Latina president of the University of Washington.
Early Life and Education[edit | edit source]
Ana Mari Cauce was born in Havana, Cuba, and immigrated to the United States with her family in 1960. She grew up in Miami, Florida. Cauce earned her B.A. in English literature and psychology from the University of Miami in 1977. She then went on to receive her Ph.D. in psychology from Yale University in 1984.
Academic Career[edit | edit source]
Cauce began her academic career at the University of Washington in 1986 as an assistant professor in the Department of Psychology. She became a full professor in 1996. Over the years, she has held various administrative positions, including director of the Honors Program, chair of the Department of American Ethnic Studies, and executive vice provost.
Research and Contributions[edit | edit source]
Cauce's research focuses on adolescent development, particularly among ethnic minority youth. She has published extensively on topics such as mental health, substance abuse, and homelessness among adolescents. Her work has been recognized with numerous awards and honors.
Presidency at the University of Washington[edit | edit source]
As president, Cauce has emphasized the importance of diversity, equity, and inclusion. She has launched several initiatives aimed at increasing access to higher education for underrepresented groups. Under her leadership, the University of Washington has also expanded its research efforts and strengthened its commitment to public service.

Cauce is openly lesbian and has been an advocate for LGBTQ+ rights. She lives in Seattle, Washington with her partner.
