School of Medicine

From WikiMD's Wellnesspedia

School of Medicine is an educational institution or a part of a university that focuses on teaching medicine, awarding a professional degree for physicians and surgeons. Such medical degrees include the Bachelor of Medicine, Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS, MBChB, BMBS), Doctor of Medicine (MD), or Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine (DO). Many medical schools offer additional degrees, such as a Doctor of Philosophy (PhD), Master's degree (M.Sc,) or other post-secondary education.

History[edit | edit source]

The first medical schools, termed the Medieval Universities, were established in the medieval Islamic world and later in the Western world from the 11th century onwards. The first universities to offer degrees in medicine were the University of Bologna and the University of Paris in the 12th century.

Medical Education[edit | edit source]

Medical education varies around the world. It typically involves entry level education at a university medical school, followed by a period of supervised practice or internship, and/or residency. This can be followed by postgraduate vocational training. A variety of teaching methods have been employed in medical education, still itself a focus of active research.

Admission[edit | edit source]

Admission to medical school varies with different countries. Most require prospective students to have a certain grade point average minimum and a certain number of hours in specific courses, such as Biology, Chemistry, and Physics. Many require the Medical College Admission Test (MCAT) for admission.
