Cystic kidney disease

From WikiMD's Food, Medicine & Wellness Encyclopedia

Cystic kidney disease refers to a group of conditions in which the kidneys contain multiple cysts. These diseases are characterized by the growth of numerous cysts filled with fluid in the kidneys. Cystic kidney diseases can impair kidney function and eventually lead to kidney failure.

Types of Cystic Kidney Disease[edit | edit source]

There are several types of cystic kidney disease, including:

  • Polycystic Kidney Disease (PKD): This is the most common form of cystic kidney disease and is usually inherited. It is characterized by the presence of multiple cysts in both kidneys. PKD can be further divided into two subtypes: autosomal dominant PKD and autosomal recessive PKD.
  • Medullary Cystic Kidney Disease (MCKD): This is a rare inherited condition that leads to cyst formation in the inner part of the kidney. Over time, these cysts can lead to kidney failure.
  • Acquired Cystic Kidney Disease (ACKD): This condition typically develops in people who already have chronic kidney disease or end-stage renal disease.

Symptoms[edit | edit source]

Symptoms of cystic kidney disease can vary depending on the type of disease and the individual. Common symptoms may include back pain, blood in the urine, high blood pressure, and frequent urinary tract infections. In severe cases, cystic kidney disease can lead to kidney failure, which may require dialysis or a kidney transplant.

Diagnosis[edit | edit source]

Cystic kidney disease is typically diagnosed through imaging tests such as ultrasound, CT scan, or MRI. Genetic testing may also be used to confirm a diagnosis in cases of inherited cystic kidney disease.

Treatment[edit | edit source]

Treatment for cystic kidney disease focuses on managing symptoms and slowing the progression of the disease. This may include medications to control blood pressure, pain management strategies, and treatments for kidney failure such as dialysis or kidney transplant.
