Diphenylhydantoin
Diphenylhydantoin (also known as Phenytoin) is a medication primarily used to control certain types of seizures and to treat and prevent seizures that may begin during or after surgery to the brain or nervous system. It is in the class of medications called anticonvulsants.
Mechanism of Action[edit | edit source]
Diphenylhydantoin works by decreasing abnormal electrical activity in the brain. It does this by blocking sodium channels in the brain that are responsible for the electrical activity leading to seizures.
Uses[edit | edit source]
Diphenylhydantoin is used to control seizures and to prevent and treat seizures during or after brain surgery or nervous system surgery. It can also be used to treat certain types of irregular heartbeats.
Side Effects[edit | edit source]
Common side effects of Diphenylhydantoin include nausea, vomiting, constipation, dizziness, headache, and trouble sleeping. Serious side effects can include skin rash, liver problems, and blood disorders.
Precautions[edit | edit source]
Before taking Diphenylhydantoin, patients should inform their healthcare provider if they are allergic to it or if they have any other allergies. This product may contain inactive ingredients, which can cause allergic reactions or other problems.
Interactions[edit | edit source]
Diphenylhydantoin can interact with a number of other medications, including certain antibiotics, blood thinners, and other seizure medications. It's important to inform your healthcare provider of all medications you are currently taking.
